Happy Independence Day!

I want to send my own personal thank you to the brave men and women who serve our country ... whether you're in the military now, or are a veteran of our armed forces, you have my deepest gratitude.
Thank you for defending our freedom!
Thank you for the sacrifices you have made to insure our safety!
Thank you for standing up for our great nation!
You deserve the utmost respect and appreciation.

One way that we can show our respect and unity is by flying the American flag this holiday weekend.  Click the link for guidelines on proper display and care of your flag:  http://www.usflag.org/flagetiquette.html

Also, if you're a pyro, be safe while you're lighting off those fireworks!  Here's a link with the fireworks laws for Sedgwick County:  http://www.sedgwickcounty.org/fire/

And if you're at the grill this weekend and want a new way to fix that barbecue, a friend sent me this website that supposedly has the best rib recipe on the planet:  http://www.texasbarbeques.com/bbq_ribs_recipes.html
The Tallboy will be trying this one out this weekend ... we'll see if it's worthy of serving to our friends after we experiment a bit!

Have a wonderful and safe Fourth of July!
Back on Monday!
=)

I'm feeling the poker jones! 07/02/2008 06:51 AM
I'm going through poker withdrawl!  I was so sick last Thursday that I missed my weekly game ... and there's no game this week because the Poker Boyfriends are abandoning me for points north AND south!  What is a girl to do when she needs to get her game on?  I may have to give the Tallboy a little slack on his honey-do list for this holiday weekend, and make him drive to Cherokee Casino in Tulsa or up to Kansas City or something.
I'm going to be lost without my Andover Crew this weekend.  =(

If you know of any good LOCAL poker events, or APL stuff, I'd always like to hear about it.  E-mail me at sunny@1053thebuzz.com .

On a different subject, starting Monday right here on www.1053thebuzz.com you'll be able to find wonderful adoptable pets from the Kansas Humane Society!  "Sunny's Kids" is back!
Just in case you didn't know, every Monday I don the scrubs and volunteer in the hospital at the humane society when I'm done being on the radio.  I decided that while I'm there I might as well find the sweetest pets for you to take a look at here on the webchannel.  So, check back often and see the great dogs and cats (and bunnies and other critters) that are up for adoption at the KHS.  Just click "Sunny's Kids" on the home page of the buzz webchannel.

Have a GREAT day!

A woman's prerogative ... 07/01/2008 06:35 AM
That's right ... it's a woman's prerogative to change her mind.
I change my mind A LOT!
Since I've been sick, I've had a lot of couch time ... sitting ... reading magazines ... snoozing ... thinking about that house I wanted to buy.  You might notice the past tense of "wanted".
Yup ... I changed my mind.
It's a good thing I have the Tallboy to be my voice of reason.  While the pool was awesome, and the lot was huge, and it was in a nice neighborhood, I needed Scott to look past all the fabulous stuff to the fact that the house is smaller than the one we have now, it costs MORE, and there's no formal dining room.  Scott asked me, "Where are you gonna put everybody if you wanna have a dinner party?"  That was enough for me.
So, I'm back on the house hunt again.
It's a good thing that we have Momo as a close family friend ... I think I would drive any other real estate agent to drink.  As it is, Momo just rolls his eyes and laughs at me!

I think Scott's pretty happy too ... at least he doesn't have to start packing up the house this week.
Little do he know ... I have a feeling this long holiday weekend is going to be filled with cleaning and organizing and fixing and painting.  What have I got to lose?  I've already driven the Tallboy to drink!  haha

WOW!!!  It's the first day of July already!
You know what that means ... I'm starting this year's fund-raising!  Woofstock is coming up on October 4th, so don't be surprised when I come around asking for donations for the Kansas Humane Society.  Let the begging begin!

Have a GREAT day!

Back from the dead ... 06/30/2008 09:23 AM
I am a very bad patient!
I'm one of those people who do not get sick very often ... so when I actually DO get sick, I am a BIG BABY!
I was so sick on Thursday that I missed my weekly poker game ... I NEVER miss poker!
For almost a week I've been feeling puny ... and I finally caved and went to the doctor on Friday - who said exactly what I knew he was going to say.  It's a virus ... there's nothing we can do but wait it out ... here's some antibiotics in case it's bacterial ... here's some cough medicine so you can sleep at night ... blah, blah, blahbity blah ...
So, I'm trying to be a good girl and take my medicine like I am supposed to ... but I'm pretty sure that pure evil would taste better than this cough syrup.  I'd complain, but it gives me such a good buzz that I'm just keepin' my mouth shut about that!  haha
Now that I'm feeling a little better, I have no voice (NOT good for a deejay!).  When is this whole sickness thing gonna end???
Okay ... done whining (for now)

The Tallboy's birthday extravagana was a lot of fun!  Our girlfriends from the Pink Boa found the most awesome hand-painted shot glass and beer pilsner for him (if you're ever looking for a great gift, let Bonnie and Steph help you - they're the best - www.pinkboa.net ).
Saturday we went out to Sumo for a fantastic dinner with the Andover Crew (and special guests Hailey and Tyler).  That's where we found out that we are Hailey's "middle aged friends".  She's 25, loves the Pub, partys like a rock star, and being her friend raises my "cool quotient" by at least 75%!  And even though I've never thought of myself as "middle aged" I have to remind myself sometimes that I am old enough to be Hailey's mother!  YIKES!
We also found out that Boyfriend Roy is super crazy generous ... okay, we already knew it, but he displayed it again on Saturday!
Have you ever had one of those friends who surprised you all the time?  Just when you think that you love them SO much ... then they do something wonderful and you feel like you're just gonna burst?  I am so lucky to have friends like that!

Okay ... medicine's wearing off ... time to go home.
=)
Need sleep! 06/24/2008 06:40 AM
What did I learn last night?  I learned that you can't disturb the routine of the dogs without serious consequences!
Scott had to travel to WAY Western Kansas yesterday for work, and because he had an early morning appointment in LAKIN (of all places) this morning, he stayed at a hotel in Garden City last night.  One night without the Tallboy sends our whole house into a tailspin!  I don't sleep well when he's not home ... and apparently, neither do the dogs.
Eddie (our neurotic terrier that's on Prozac - and who is primarily Scott's dog) paced the floor all night.  Starting at 9pm, he was at the back door every hour on the hour, barking to be let out.  So, he'd go in the back yard, look for Scott, not find him, and come back in and lay at the foot of the bed and sigh.  It was the most pathetic thing!  Needless to say, I was up with him all night.  I think the next time Scott has to work out of town, he'd better take Eddie with him!

And now I can't even go home and take a nap, because Momo is coming over tonight to do a market analysis on the house.  So, I need to get my butt in gear and take care of all of those little projects I've been putting off.  Anybody up for a little weeding with me today?
I just hope that no one has already put an offer on that other house!
Keep your fingers crossed!
And have a GREAT day!

=)
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MOM!!! 06/23/2008 08:30 AM
First things first!  I have to wish my Mom a happy birthday today!  WOOHOO!!!

Secondly, I have to say THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU to Jeff, Jennifer, Marcy, Bill, Mike, and everyone else who sent me the websites where I can get the clown t-shirts (see blog entry from last week).  You guys are awesome!  Look for a photo of ME sporting the "can't sleep" t-shirt soon.  =)

Wow!  What a weekend!
Friday is a blur ... but if the pictures are any indication, we had a GREAT time!  I was told that if I posted any of the pictures here, I would be in big trouble ... so, you'll have to use your imagination.  It all started at Heroes for the Buzz Friday After Work Party, where girlfriend Hailey came by for chicken and margaritas.  Next stop, Club HJ (her loft) where the poker boyfriends met us for more cocktails.  Then we made our way over to Torre's for Mr. Brew (Mike's band) and we ended up at America's Pub.  I haven't been to the Pub in a LONG TIME ... but now I remember how much fun that place is!
One thing I discovered (again) this weekend ... I am too old to party like that.  Pure and simple.

The next morning I had the Sisterhood of the Divine Makeover luncheon (a benefit for Dress for Success).  SO MUCH FUN!!!  I got to see some very fun girly stuff and some awesome make-overs.  I have to send some love out to my girlfriends at The Pink Boa in Andover ... Bonnie and Steph let me borrow an INCREDIBLE handbag and some super cute Art by Amy jewelry, so I was fully accessorized for the luncheon.  I wish they could have gone with me ... but they were at market in Dallas, getting a bunch of cool new stuff for the store.  I can't wait to see what they're bringing back - I feel a shopping spree coming on!  =)

Poker at Karla's Saturday night saw the Tallboy and Sunny coming up dead even for the night ... but I have to rub it in a little ... it's because I won $65 (negating Scott's losses).

And yesterday (I almost don't want to write this because I am afraid I will jinx it) I found a house that I absolutely LOVE!!!  So, I've put real estate guru extraordinaire (and all-around good guy) Momo Khan on the case.  I had forgotten until I talked to him on the phone yesterday, but I did this to him last time too ... went out on a Sunday to just "check out" open houses, find one I have to have, call Momo on a Sunday afternoon and say, "You gotta sell my house so I can buy this other one!"  And Momo is so good, he just says, "No problem."
So, I'll keep you posted on the new house front ... wish me luck!

Have a GREAT day!

My favorite work day of the year! 06/20/2008 07:21 AM
It's better than payday!  Better than that personal day that you saved for a special occasion (like a mani/pedi).  Better than the Friday that you get all of your work done early so you get to start your weekend around noon.

IT'S TAKE YOUR DOG TO WORK DAY!

The day that the radio station is taken over by the canines that we usually have to leave at home.  So, I brought my sweetheart Kirby to co-host the radio show with me today.  I love it, because normally everyone is too busy running around to stop into the studio and just say "Hi" and chat for a minute.  I usually just hear familiar voices saying, "Hey, Sunny" ... but, by the time I turn around, the person is half-way down the hall.
Kirby sits in the doorway to the studio and greets everyone as they walk by ... and there is not a soul alive that can pass by his sweet face without kneeling down and handing him some love.
And the added bonus ... I get to hang with my Kirby Punkin for an extra few hours today!

I do have 2 other puppy dogs at home ... Eddie (who's on Prozac and gets a bit nippy when he's stressed) and Oliver (who is cute, and adorable, and barks non-stop when people walk by the studio).  Those two clowns are at home.  I learned my lesson when I brought Oliver to "Take Your Dog to Work Day" a few years ago.  I had a smart-ass boss who decided that every time I opened the mic to do a break, he would come and knock on the studio door, which sent Oliver into orbit!  I'm sure it made for interesting radio.

Kirby is our "good" dog.  Yeah ... he tears up the garbage occasionally, and barks at the kids next door every time I let him outside ... but all-in-all, I couldn't ask for a better kiddo.  Can you tell I'm in love?

So, poker last night was an exercise in frustration ... I guess some people were just born with a rabbit's foot up their butt.  I am NOT one of those people.  Good luck DOES NOT follow me.  It follows people who get into pots with me ... then they end up stacking all of my chips.  But, I'm not gonna belly-ache about it ... I'm just going to say that I'm glad that Poker Buddy Jeff is feeling a lot better!  That was the good part of last night ... seeing his smiling face!
Poker Boyfriend Barry was still in the tournament when I left last night ... I just hope he won!

After Heroes tonight, we're off to Torre's Pizzaria to check out Mike's Reed's band "Mr. Brew"!  I've never seen them, but I hear they're great!  If you're up for some live music, they start at 9pm.

HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND!
=)
I guess I'm not the only one ... 06/19/2008 06:49 AM
I have blogged about my issues before (and there are quite a few!).  So, you know about how clowns freak me out.
Standing in line at Harrah's in Las Vegas, checking into our hotel room, the Tallboy pointed this out to me:

As if I needed another reason to NOT sleep in Vegas!
Now I am on a quest to find one of these t-shirts for myself.  If you know where I can find one, e-mail me at sunny@1053thebuzz.com .

It's poker night tonight ... and Marky Mark Bogner, the weather boyfriend, says we could see more storms!  The last two weeks, we have played our poker tournament under tornado warnings ... could tonight make the tri-fecta?  We'll have to see ...

Wish me luck!
Have a GREAT day!
=)

Feeling nostalgic ... 06/18/2008 08:21 AM
A few entries ago, I told you about my friend Dave from high school.  He passed away a few weeks ago from complications of Freidreich's Ataxia (a disease that causes progressive damage to the nervous system).  He dealt with the disease with humor and tenacity and a take no prisoners attitude.  I remember having a huge crush on him while working with him on a summer musical show ... because he always made me laugh.

Even though I haven't seen Dave in many years, I thought about him often ... and his passing hit me hard.  I don't know if it is because it makes me think of my own mortality, or if it is because of the impact I know it has on my friend (his big brother) Scott.  Either way, it's made me take an unscheduled walk down memory lane.

Dave's memorial and celebration was this past Sunday, but because it was back home in Minnesota (and you can't get a plane ticket out of this town for less than $1000!!!!!) I was unable to attend.  So, I started going through the hundreds of pictures I have from back home to see if I had some suitable for his celebration.  {WOW!  I had some hair styles from HELL!}   I found a few ... but apparently other people found more.  My girlfriend Laurie somehow produced a prom picture from when I was a sophomore ... it made the rounds for everyone to see.  YIKES!!  I'll find some way to repay Laurie for that little stunt!  ;)

One good thing came out of this, though ... I now have e-mail addys for lots of people I've been thinking about over the years (but I've just been too lazy to google them and find out contact info).  I think this is going to be the summer of reaching out to old friends.  Maybe I should take a typing class ... I feel a lot of e-mails coming on!
Another good thing ... it made me remember to NOT take anything for granted.  Life is short ... if you love someone - tell them!  Stop waiting for things to happen in your life ... start HAPPENING to your life.
Okay ... I'm off my soapbox now.
I miss you, Dave.
I love you, Scooter.
=)
Still tryin' to fix it! 06/17/2008 08:57 AM
So, the IT guys are trying to fix the pics from the last blog entry.  Apparently, the Vegas photos were just too hot to handle!  I'll get them into a photo album on my main page today ... then you can create your own captions for each one.  Let your imagination run wild ... if you can think it up, we probably did it while we were there!  hahaha

Now the new project is to get the house ready for sale.  Yes ... I am making the Tallboy move me again!  I am a mean wife!  I want to go east ... Andover, or close to it.  I gotta live closer to the Andover crew if we're going to become regulars for 2-4-1s at Stooges every Wednesday!  We went house hunting on Sunday and saw some very nice places, but nothing is jumping out at me yet.  We'll see ... maybe next Sunday!   =)

BTW - I can't believe I forgot to mention this on Friday!  The Thursday night poker game was played during tornado warnings for the second week in a row.  You know you're die-hard if you drive through the tornado warning to get to the game ... and then STAY in a metal building with a bunch of pointy metal thingies hanging all over the place.  We had a plan, though.  If we started hearing the "train" noise that everyone who's been in a tornado talks about, we were all gonna pile into the bathroom - after we shoved our chips into our pockets!  Hey ... you gotta have priorities, right?
BUT, that's not even the news ... I somehow managed to talk Poker Boyfriend Barry and some other guy into a 3 way split of the prize $$.  They both had me out-chipped big-time ... so I think Barry was just being sweet by okaying a split - God love him!  I think I owe him a Jagerbomb for that one ... like a 3 foot tall Jagerbomb like the one we had in Vegas!

Thirsty, Barry?  Next one's on me!
=)
